The groundbreaking " show," assembled from raw, previously unseen 35mm film, will be presented across multiple screens, featuring an integrated lighting show designed by world-renowned lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe (The Rolling Stones, Elton John) and an immersive audio mix by Academy Award winner Paul Massey (Bohemian Rhapsody, James Bond: No Time to Die, Moonage Daydream).
David Bowie conceived and produced“Stage” in 1978 during the Isolar II concerts at London’s Earls Court, to promote his iconic “Heroes” album. These legendary concerts, which have remained untouched in the Bowie Archives for nearly 50 years, showcase Bowie at the height of his powers as a live performer and are considered the best live performances of his career. It has taken five decades for technology to advance enough to bring his vision to life with cutting-edge spatial audio and visual technology. The production blurs the line between cinema and a live concert. Fans will experience the sensation of attending an authentic David Bowie show.
Brett Morgen unearthed the original footage 10 years ago while working on the Grammy Award-winning *Moonage Daydream*. As early as 2018, Morgen and the Bowie Estate began discussing the possibility of bringing “Stage” to arenas worldwide, but it wasn’t until 2024, when Rob Hallett, former president of international operations at AEG Live, joined the project, that the dream became a reality.
Rob Hallett, founder of Wonderworld and former president of AEG International, said, "David Bowie has given us an extraordinary treasure—an unprecedented concert experience that has yet to be witnessed. Working closely with David Bowie’s estate and Brett Morgen, we are ensuring that this experience remains 100% faithful to his legacy while making his genius accessible to fans around the world and a new generation."
A masterclass in visual and audio integration, Morgen has spent nearly a decade reconfiguring, editing, color-grading, and hand-painting the archival footage. By using longer, uninterrupted takes of Bowie— show —the production creates an intimate, real- atmosphere , mimicking a live performance in real time. Combined with sound and lighting design by Wonderworld’s Oscar-winning, world-renowned creative team, it will show , Bowie, and his band in arenas around the world.
Tricia Tuttle, Director of the Berlinale, said: “The Berlinale is a place where cinema, art, and new forms of storytelling intersect. It’s like a dream come true: Bowie, Brett Morgen, and a world-class sound and lighting team all coming together in the city’s premier music venue. To have this world premiere in Berlin, a city so closely connected to David Bowie, makes the experience especially meaningful.”
